MDO Partners, a boutique law firm based in Miami, Florida, has launched a new Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practice area to complement its Global Compliance and Business Ethics practice.
Regardless of size, businesses must understand and address ESG concerns due to increasing regulations and scrutiny from socially responsible investors, proxy advisory firms, the markets, other members of their supply chain, NGOs, employees, and consumers. ESG includes:
Climate Change
Labor Issues
Health and Safety
Bribery and Corruption
Political Contributions
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, including Board Diversity
Corporate Governance
Privacy and Data Protection
Sustainable Investing, and
Human Rights Violations
MDO can assist in due diligence practices, policy development, disclosure, training, reputation management, and compliance.
The new ESG Practice will be led by Managing Partner, Richard Montes de Oca, and the firm’s General Counsel and Chief Diversity Officer, Marcia Narine Weldon. Together, Montes de Oca and Narine Weldon have over 40 years of ESG and global compliance experience. Montes de Oca is a former Assistant General Counsel and Global Compliance Officer for a major public cruise line. He is also an adjunct law school professor who teaches compliance. Narine Weldon is a law professor who teaches, researches, and speaks on ESG and a former public company Deputy General Counsel, Chief Privacy Officer, and Chief Compliance Officer for a public company.
"The launch of our ESG Practice is a natural extension of the global compliance and business ethics work we’ve delivered to our clients over the past 10 years,” said Montes de Oca. “In today’s environment, businesses are encountering unprecedented ESG issues with serious implications that require trusted, specialized, and practical advice. I’m excited to lead this important initiative to help our clients."
"Whether it’s structuring an ESG Program, conducting risk assessments, advising on human rights disclosure requirements, or designing and delivering training, we can provide clients with efficient and cost effective ESG solutions,” says Narine Weldon.
The Firm draws upon its extensive experience in corporate law and in developing effective global compliance programs for Fortune 500, private and international companies in various industries to ensure that clients receive proactive and thoughtful representation with ESG matters.
Narine Weldon is speaking on a panel at a virtual conference put on by the American Bar Association's International Law Section discussing ESG. The conference is for In-House Counsel and attorneys interested in learning about the current state, and emerging opportunities and challenges of ESG. Details and a link to register are in the section below.
